Review: build a real conversation
Compare choices, connect ideas, and arrange an outing using familiar Mandarin.
What you’ll work on
- Respond to the meaning of a partner’s question.
- Combine short learned patterns into a connected exchange.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.
你好,我叫安娜。你叫什么名字?
Hello, my name is Anna. What is your name?
我叫小林。你去过北京吗?
My name is Xiaolin. Have you been to Beijing?
我没去过北京,但是我想去。
I have not been to Beijing, but I would like to go.
你喜欢喝茶吗?
Do you like drinking tea?
喜欢。我们明天下午三点去喝茶,好吗?
Yes. Shall we go for tea at three tomorrow afternoon?
好,明天见。
Okay, see you tomorrow.
Listen for the purpose of the question
A conversation can move from names to experiences to plans. 什么名字 asks a name; 去过…吗 asks about a previous visit; 几点 asks a clock time.
Choose a response to the actual question rather than reciting the next line from memory. You may answer briefly and ask 你呢? to return a suitable question.
Connect two short ideas
A long sentence is not required for useful communication. Say one clear idea, then add another. 但是 means but; in the dialogue it links a missing experience to a wish to go.
Keep the time expression before the planned action. Combine only words you understand, and use the pinyin or transcript when the support helps.
Practice with one changed detail
Repeat the conversation with your own name, a different drink, or a different meeting time. Change one detail at a time, then try responding without the written model.
If a phrase remains difficult, return to its lesson. The aim is to communicate a small meaning reliably, not to memorize one perfect script.
Lesson vocabulary
Listen once, say it aloud, and try to recall the Chinese before looking.

Practice questions
Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Pinyin tone marks matter. For typed answers, use simplified characters or the taught pinyin (spacing is flexible).
Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
Independent practice
These are independent practice tasks. The site does not record your voice, save your writing, or grade open-ended answers. Ask a teacher or conversation partner for feedback when you can.
Speaking practice
Have a short imaginary conversation: introduce yourself, ask about an experience, state a preference, and arrange to meet.
Writing practice
Write a six-line conversation using your own choices of name, drink, and time. Check each question has a relevant answer.
