About How to Learn Chinese
How to Learn Chinese helps English-speaking adults find useful learning resources and understand how to combine them. The site includes a resource directory, beginner course, study guide, and practice tools.
Resource directory
Our directory explains what each resource offers, where it fits, how access works, and what you may need alongside it. The learning path connects those choices with practical milestones in listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
Our first edition draws on providers’ public information and research on learning techniques. We explain the distinction between product descriptions, provider studies, and independent evidence in our research approach. We have not completed long-term trials of every listed product.
Lessons and practice tools
Our beginner course and eight mini-lessons introduce Mandarin using simplified characters, pinyin, and English explanations. Vocabulary practice includes 5,000 cards with example sentences and translations. A 1,000-verb reference adds source-backed Mandarin meanings and usage. The grammar reference covers sentence patterns, classifiers, questions, and aspect.
The beginner label describes the intended starting audience. This is not an accredited course or an HSK preparation syllabus. Content was authored with AI assistance and has not received an independent teacher’s full editorial review. Lesson completion and vocabulary progress are saved on your device.
Pronunciation in our learning tools
Pronunciation buttons use a Google voice when available, with a device voice as a fallback. Accent and quality depend on the selected voice. The audio is generated speech, and written text is available alongside it. Our own library does not yet include recorded audio or video lessons; the directory points to providers that offer those formats.
Access and cost
You do not need an account or subscription to use this guide or our practice tools. External resources have their own access terms, including free materials, paid features, and limited samples. Each listing explains the differences.
