A short conversation

Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.

Mei

现在几点?

xiàn zài jǐ diǎn

What time is it now?

Lin

现在两点半。

xiàn zài liǎng diǎn bàn

It is half past two now.

Mei

我们明天几点见?

wǒ men míng tiān jǐ diǎn jiàn

What time shall we meet tomorrow?

Lin

明天下午三点见。

míng tiān xià wǔ sān diǎn jiàn

See you tomorrow at three in the afternoon.

Tell the time

Use a number followed by 点 for the hour. 三点 is three o’clock. 半 after the hour means half past: 三点半. Two o’clock is normally 两点.

现在几点? asks the current time. A time expression is enough for a short reply; you do not need to translate every word of the English “It is…”.

两点半liǎng diǎn bànhalf past two
三点十分sān diǎn shí fēnten past three

Move from large to small

Date expressions run from larger units to smaller ones: year, month, day. 三月八号 is March 8. In everyday speech 号 is common for the day of the month; 日 is frequent in formal written dates.

Monday through Saturday use 星期 plus one through six. Sunday is 星期天 or 星期日. 星期几? asks which day of the week.

星期一xīng qī yīMonday
三月八号sān yuè bā hàoMarch 8

Put time before the verb

Time can appear before the subject or after it, but usually comes before the verb: 我们明天见 or 明天我们见. Do not copy the English habit of routinely placing every time phrase at the end.

Combine larger and smaller time units: 明天下午三点, tomorrow afternoon at three. This helps the listener find the day before the hour.

我们明天见。wǒ men míng tiān jiànWe will see each other tomorrow.
明天下午三点见。míng tiān xià wǔ sān diǎn jiànSee you tomorrow at three in the afternoon.

Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
