  • Keep dictionary pinyin separate from spoken tone changes.
READ & LISTEN

A short conversation

Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.

Mei

你好!我叫美。

nǐ hǎo. wǒ jiào měi

Hello! My name is Mei.

Lin

你好!请再说一遍。

nǐ hǎo. qǐng zài shuō yī biàn

Hello! Please say it again.

Mei

我叫美。你呢?

wǒ jiào měi. nǐ ne

My name is Mei. And you?

Lin

我叫林。很高兴认识你。

wǒ jiào lín. hěn gāo xìng rèn shi nǐ

My name is Lin. Nice to meet you.

Build the exchange from memory

Cover the dialogue and try the first line yourself. Add a greeting, a name, and a question for the other person. If you cannot recall a phrase, look once, hide it, and try again.

The review combines words already taught. You can replace the names without changing 我叫… or 你叫什么名字?

我叫林。你呢?wǒ jiào lín. nǐ neMy name is Lin. And you?

Check sound and spelling separately

For listening practice, notice the third-tone change in 你好 and the rising pronunciation of 一 before 遍. For typed pinyin in this course, write the dictionary tones shown in the vocabulary.

A missing tone mark can change the meaning. The grader ignores capitalization and punctuation but keeps tone marks and ü distinct. Use spaces between pinyin syllables as shown.

EXERCISES

Practice questions

Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Pinyin tone marks matter. For typed answers, use simplified characters or the taught pinyin (spacing is flexible).

Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.

02Which question asks a name?
03You missed the words. Which phrase requests repetition?

SPEAKING AND WRITING

Independent practice

These are independent practice tasks. The site does not record your voice, save your writing, or grade open-ended answers. Ask a teacher or conversation partner for feedback when you can.

01 / SPEAKING

Speaking practice

Perform the dialogue without looking at the English. On a second pass change the names and ask for slower speech.

02 / WRITING

Writing practice

Write a four-line first meeting, including a repair phrase. Check every pinyin tone against the vocabulary.
