Checkpoint: a first conversation
Check greetings, pinyin, names, and communication repair with eight questions.
What you’ll work on
- Recall Unit 1 expressions independently.
- Identify tone and spelling differences.
- Notice which phrases need another review.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.
您好!请问,你叫什么名字?
Hello! Excuse me, what is your name?
我叫林。
My name is Lin.
谢谢。再见!
Thank you. Goodbye!
再见!
Goodbye!
Try before revealing
Answer all eight questions from memory. A revealed answer earns no point on that attempt and remains available for review. This checkpoint is a personal study check, not a proficiency result.
After checking, revisit one phrase you missed and use it in a new spoken exchange. Retrying with answers hidden is more useful than copying the displayed answer.
Lesson vocabulary
Listen once, say it aloud, and try to recall the Chinese before looking.
| Chinese / pinyin | English | Listen |
|---|---|---|
| 您好 nín hǎo | hello (respectful) | |
| 叫什么名字 jiào shén me míng zi | be called what name | |
| 听不懂 tīng bù dǒng | cannot understand what is heard | |
| 中文 zhōng wén | Chinese language |
Practice questions
Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Pinyin tone marks matter. For typed answers, use simplified characters or the taught pinyin (spacing is flexible).
Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
Independent practice
These are independent practice tasks. The site does not record your voice, save your writing, or grade open-ended answers. Ask a teacher or conversation partner for feedback when you can.
Speaking practice
Introduce yourself using an invented name, ask the other person’s name, request repetition, and finish politely.
Writing practice
List two expressions to review tomorrow and write one new sentence with each.
Review the lesson objectives
Select the tasks you can complete independently. This self-assessment does not change your quiz score.
