A short conversation

Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.

Mei

zhè ge duō shao qián

Lin

shí wǔ kuài

Fifteen yuan.

Mei

那个呢?

nà ge ne

And that one?

Lin

那个十块五毛。

nà ge shí kuài wǔ máo

That one is ten yuan and five jiao.

Ask how much

多少钱 asks the price. You can use 这个多少钱? when pointing to an item. 多少 asks a quantity without assuming a small number, while 钱 tells us the question concerns money.

The number comes before the money unit. 十五块 means fifteen yuan in everyday speech. Currency and buying conventions can vary by place; the examples here use mainland Chinese yuan.

多少钱?duō shao qiánHow much does it cost?
这本书多少钱?zhè běn shū duō shao qiánHow much is this book?

Understand yuan and jiao

元 is the formal unit; 块 is common in speech. 角 is a tenth of a yuan, commonly called 毛 in speech. 十块五毛 is 10.50 yuan.

For initial practice, say both units clearly. Price shortcuts exist in everyday speech, but do not guess an unclear price: ask the speaker to repeat or show it.

十五块shí wǔ kuàififteen yuan
十块五毛shí kuài wǔ máoten yuan and five jiao (10.50 yuan)

Point out your choice

这 means “this” and 那 means “that”. Before a counted noun, include its measure word: 这本书, that book 那本书. When the noun is understood, 这个 and 那个 can stand alone.

贵 describes something expensive; 便宜 means inexpensive. 这个很贵 is a description. 我要这个 states your choice to buy or order this one.

这个很贵。zhè ge hěn guìThis is expensive.
我要这个。wǒ yào zhè geI would like this one.

EXERCISES

Practice questions

Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Pinyin tone marks matter. For typed answers, use simplified characters or the taught pinyin (spacing is flexible).

Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
