Order food and drinks
Use 想, 要, and 喜欢 to state a preference and place a simple order.
What you’ll work on
- Say what you would like to drink.
- Use a cup measure word in an order.
- Distinguish liking something from ordering it.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.
你想喝什么?
What would you like to drink?
我想喝茶。
I would like to drink tea.
你要一杯茶吗?
Would you like a cup of tea?
要,谢谢。请给我一杯茶。
Yes, thank you. Please give me a cup of tea.
Express a wish with 想
想 before a verb expresses wanting or wishing to do something: 想喝茶. The second verb stays in its ordinary form. 想 is useful for politely stating what you would like.
喝 is used for drinking, while 吃 is used for eating. Ask 你想喝什么? The question word 什么 stays where the drink would appear in the answer.
Place a clear order
要 can express wanting something in an order. 我要一杯茶 is direct and ordinary in many service situations; add 请 or 谢谢 for a polite exchange. 请给我… means “Please give me…”.
Include the quantity and measure word: 一杯茶, 两杯水. A cup of tea is not the same noun phrase as a cup as an object, 一个杯子.
State a preference with 喜欢
喜欢 means “like”. 我喜欢喝茶 describes a preference; it does not necessarily place an order now. 不喜欢 gives the negative.
Use the name of the food or drink you mean. 饭 can refer to cooked rice or a meal depending on the phrase. 米饭 clearly refers to cooked rice.
