Experiences with 过
Ask whether someone has ever tried something or visited a place.
What you’ll work on
- Use 过 after a verb for experience.
- Ask about a previous experience with 吗.
- Use 没有 + verb + 过 for no such experience.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.
你去过北京吗?
Have you ever been to Beijing?
去过。我喜欢北京。
Yes, I have. I like Beijing.
你吃过饺子吗?
Have you ever eaten dumplings?
没有,我没吃过饺子。
No, I have not eaten dumplings before.
Focus on having the experience
过 after a verb can say that the experience has happened at least once before. 我去过北京 concerns the experience of visiting Beijing, rather than narrating a particular completed trip.
过 is neutral in tone as this aspect marker. The same character has other uses and pronunciations, so use the reading for the phrase you are learning.
Ask and answer about experience
Add 吗 at the end of the statement. A short positive reply repeats the verb and 过: 去过. For a negative, keep 过 after the verb and add 没 or 没有 before it.
Notice the contrast with completed-action 了: 没去过 retains 过, while 没买书 does not retain that completed-action 了. These particles have different jobs.
Add a useful follow-up
After a yes–no answer, add a short preference or description to keep the conversation going. 去过。北京很大。 is a small but complete exchange.
You do not need to share real travel history. Imagine a character’s experiences, then ask and answer using the same pattern with foods or familiar places.

Practice questions
Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Pinyin tone marks matter. For typed answers, use simplified characters or the taught pinyin (spacing is flexible).
Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
Independent practice
These are independent practice tasks. The site does not record your voice, save your writing, or grade open-ended answers. Ask a teacher or conversation partner for feedback when you can.
