Completed actions with 了
Use 了 for a completed event and 没有 for an action that did not happen.
What you’ll work on
- Recognize verb + 了 as one completed-action pattern.
- Use a time expression for when an event happened.
- Negate a completed event with 没有 and omit 了.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.
你昨天买了什么?
What did you buy yesterday?
我买了两本书。
I bought two books.
你喝咖啡了吗?
Have you had coffee?
没有,我没喝咖啡。
No, I haven’t had coffee.
Completed is not the same as past tense
了 after a verb can present an action as completed: 买了两本书. It is an aspect marker, not a universal past-tense ending. A past-time expression can occur without 了 when the sentence has a different focus.
Start with a concrete completed action and a quantity: 我昨天买了两本书. 昨天 tells when; 了 presents the buying as a completed event.
Negate the event with 没有
Use 没有 or its shorter form 没 before the verb to say that an event did not happen. In this basic negative completed-event pattern, omit the completed-action 了.
Contrast 不喝, which can describe a habit or refusal, with 没喝, which says the drinking did not happen. Context matters, so include a time word when it helps.
Recognize a useful question as a whole
你吃饭了吗? is a common question asking whether someone has eaten. Here 了 is at the end of the clause rather than directly after the verb. Sentence-final 了 has related uses that extend beyond completed events.
Learn this question as a complete chunk for now. Answer 吃了 or 没有 / 还没有. Avoid adding 了 to every sentence merely because the English translation is in the past.
