MANDARIN SENTENCE PATTERN

Topic and comment

Set up what you are talking about, then say something about it.

Topic, + comment

Mandarin often places a known topic at the beginning of a sentence. The comment then says something about that topic.

This is more than a word-order trick: the topic should be understandable from context. Start with short, useful examples.

Examples

这本书,我看过。
Zhè běn shū, wǒ kàn guo.
This book, I have read.
咖啡,我不喝。
Kāfēi, wǒ bù hē.
As for coffee, I do not drink it.
今天,我没有时间。
Jīntiān, wǒ méiyǒu shíjiān.
Today, I do not have time.

Keep in mind

Use context to make the topic clear. Arbitrarily moving words can change emphasis or make a sentence unnatural.
