MANDARIN SENTENCE PATTERN

Question words stay in place

Use 什么, 谁, 哪儿, and 什么时候 in the position of the missing information.

Keep the statement order; replace the unknown part

In a basic Mandarin question, the question word usually occupies the same position as its answer. You do not move it to the front as English often does.

什么 asks what, 谁 asks who, 哪儿 asks where, and 什么时候 asks when. 哪里 is another common way to ask where.

Examples

你喝什么?
Nǐ hē shénme?
What do you drink?
谁是老师?
Shéi shì lǎoshī?
Who is the teacher?
你去哪儿?
Nǐ qù nǎr?
Where are you going?

Keep in mind

Question words ask for information; they do not require the yes/no particle 吗.
