MANDARIN SENTENCE PATTERN

Describing with 很

Use an adjective as the main description of a subject.

Subject + 很 (hěn) + adjective

Many Mandarin adjectives can describe a subject directly. In a neutral statement 很 often links the subject and adjective without strongly emphasizing very.

Context and stress determine how strong 很 is. In a simple negative description, 不 can precede the adjective.

Examples

她很好。
Tā hěn hǎo.
She is well.
今天很热。
Jīntiān hěn rè.
It is hot today.
这本书不贵。
Zhè běn shū bú guì.
This book is not expensive.

Keep in mind

The common pattern is 今天很热, without 是 before 很热.
