MANDARIN SENTENCE PATTERN

Basic word order

Build a statement with a subject, a verb, and an object.

Subject + verb + object

A useful starting pattern is subject–verb–object. Unlike English verbs, Mandarin verbs do not change their form to agree with I, you, or they.

Learn whole phrases alongside the pattern. Time, place, and topic expressions add other possibilities; not every Chinese sentence has an explicit object.

Examples

我学中文。
Wǒ xué Zhōngwén.
I study Chinese.
她喝茶。
Tā hē chá.
She drinks tea.
我们看书。
Wǒmen kàn shū.
We read books.

Keep in mind

Do not add 是 (shì) before every verb. 我学中文 is a complete statement.
