Pinyin sounds and names
Give your name and learn why Mandarin spelling needs its own sound habits.
What you’ll work on
- Give and ask for a name.
- Distinguish pinyin from English spelling.
- Recognize the vowel ü and the sound groups j/q/x and zh/ch/sh.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.
你叫什么名字?
What is your name?
我叫林。你呢?
My name is Lin. And you?
我叫美。
My name is Mei.
很高兴认识你。
Nice to meet you.
Use 叫 with a name
我叫… means “My name is…”. Put your name directly after 叫. Mandarin verbs do not change their form for I, you, or she. Ask 你叫什么名字? and listen for the name after 叫.
什么 means “what” and stays where the missing information belongs. Do not move it to the front just because English does.
Listen to initials rather than guessing
Pinyin q is not English q, and x is not English x. Learn j/q/x as a group with the front of the tongue near the hard palate; q has a stronger puff of air than j. Compare zh/ch/sh with the tongue farther back. A recorded pinyin chart is more useful than an English sound substitution.
The letter ü represents a rounded front vowel: begin with an ee-like tongue position and round your lips. After j, q, x, and y the two dots are omitted in standard spelling; after n and l they can distinguish words.
Keep a short exchange moving
你呢? means “And you?” when the previous question supplies the context. It does not ask for a name by itself without context. 很高兴认识你 is a useful response after an introduction.
Names can be real or invented in practice. Listen to the syllables of 认识: 认 has a fourth tone and 识 is neutral in this word. A character can have different pronunciations in different words, so learn pronunciation with the word.

Practice questions
Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Pinyin tone marks matter. For typed answers, use simplified characters or the taught pinyin (spacing is flexible).
Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
Independent practice
These are independent practice tasks. The site does not record your voice, save your writing, or grade open-ended answers. Ask a teacher or conversation partner for feedback when you can.
Speaking practice
Give your name, ask another person’s name, and return the question with 你呢. Then compare j/q/x sounds on a recorded pinyin chart.
Writing practice
Write two introductions using different names. Underline the word that asks “what”.
