Checkpoint: ability and experience
Check useful “can” patterns, completed actions, and experience statements in context.
What you’ll work on
- Choose an expression that fits the intended situation.
- Recall positive and negative event and experience patterns.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Pinyin shows dictionary tones; natural speech includes the tone changes taught in the lessons.
你吃饭了吗?
Have you eaten?
还没有。我想吃饺子。
Not yet. I would like to eat dumplings.
Read the situation before choosing a marker
Identify whether you mean a skill, present possibility, permission, a completed action, or experience. The English word “can” and an English past-tense verb do not always map to one Mandarin word.
Check the negative forms carefully: 我没买书 omits completed-event 了, while 我没去过北京 retains experience-marking 过. If a question is difficult, revisit its dialogue and try another example with a familiar verb.
Lesson vocabulary
Listen once, say it aloud, and try to recall the Chinese before looking.

| 游泳 yóuyǒng | to swim | |
| 开车 kāi chē | to drive | |

| 北京 Běijīng | Beijing |
Practice questions
Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Pinyin tone marks matter. For typed answers, use simplified characters or the taught pinyin (spacing is flexible).
Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
Independent practice
These are independent practice tasks. The site does not record your voice, save your writing, or grade open-ended answers. Ask a teacher or conversation partner for feedback when you can.
Speaking practice
Ask a partner about a learned skill and an experience, then say whether you can meet tomorrow.
Writing practice
Write a short account with one completed action, one experience, and one plan. Use the lesson examples to check each marker.
Review the lesson objectives
Select the tasks you can complete independently. This self-assessment does not change your quiz score.
